What is the Office of the SIGTARP?

When the United States government created the Trouble Asset Relief Program, or TARP, in 2008, there were many reasonable concerns over the execution of this massive relief fund. With billions of dollars being poured into major banks through equity programs and similar debt-relief measures, the government established a series of fraud-prevention measures to protect these transactions. As a result, the government set up the office of the Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program, or SIGTARP.

Duties of the SIGTARP

This office was specially created through the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act. The position falls under the selection of the President of the United States and is officially confirmed by the US Senate. As the Inspector General of the Treasury has certain oversight responsibilities over TARP funds, the SIGTARP has some additional duties in regards to Treasury oversight. The following responsibilities fall under the watch of the SIGTARP:

  • Maintain and increase TARP transaction transparency
  • Prevent and investigate instances of TARP fraud
  • Detect fraud with private corporations and government workers
  • Assess and increase TARP efficiency

Although this office and Treasury oversight groups check over TARP transactions regularly, there is still a significant possibility for a fraudulent transaction to slip through the system and it is individuals like you who have the power to put them to a stop.
